Top Albums 2013

atom-for-peace-amok

This was a strange year in music for me. I felt out of step with many of the year’s big records and was also disappointed, though not exactly shocked, that many of albums that ended up at the top of my list got so little attention. Listening to as much music as I do, there were long periods of time this year where I felt bogged down by the amount of mediocre releases that for some reason I felt obligated to sort through. But there were certainly bright spots and whether that came in the form of innovative debuts, welcome returns or new incarnations they were a welcome reprieve from the seemingly endless amount of music that simply came and went. I purposely excluded Cascine releases for the purposes of this list to maintain an even playing field. Yes, Thom Yorke and his Atoms For Peace project ended up at the top of my list, which surprises exactly no one, but that spot was far from guaranteed. Looking back though I found that play counts don’t lie and there was nothing else this year that I connected with that directly – especially after witnessing the incredible live incarnation of the band. As usual this list leans towards what I found the most interesting, innovative or simply couldn’t stop playing.
