The Returned is the latest original series on Sundance Channel and it only took one episode before I was hooked. It’s based on an original concept that I’ve seen lazy critics call zombies, however the characters here aren’t the walking dead but rather people who have died and reappeared unharmed, exactly as they were on the day of their death. It’s a far more interesting and complicated idea that is supported by some excellent writing, film-quality production and an original soundtrack by Scottish post-rockers Mogwai. Twin Peaks is certainly a big influence and there is a spooky, small-town full of secrets feel to the show that has been very rewarding thus far. Sundance Channel has been on an impressive roll lately with The Returned and Top of the Lake which aired earlier this year. It’s an exciting new option for writers and filmmakers scouting landing spots for their original content.
