I’ve been really impressed with the Sundance Channel mini-series Top of the Lake. The storyline, a mystery centered around a missing 12 year old recently discovered to be pregnant, shares some obvious similarities in theme and setting to Twin Peaks and The Killing but is not as strange or creative as the former and is far superior to the latter. Elizabeth Moss is excellent but it’s Peter Mullan as Matt Mitcham who steals the show. The series features smart writing and beautiful camerawork with quality production across the board. It’s interesting to see a filmmaker of Jane Campion’s stature work in a new format and I think the Sundance Channel delving into original programming offers up all kinds of exciting opportunities for writers and directors. It’s not in direct competition with HBO but because of it’s standing as a movie channel isn’t prevented from cursing or nudity – meaning they are free to create film-quality adult entertainment. I’m looking forward to checking out their other new series Rectify which premieres Monday.
