I just discovered The Wake! Only 21 years late to that party haha… I’ve been stuck on the Factory Records sound/era all winter but this is easily the most rewarding discovery I’ve made from their lesser known catalog. Harmony certainly owes a debt to Joy Division but that doesn’t preclude it from being a classic in its own right. It’s also held up very well, sounding confident and contemporary when played up against current bands like DIIV, Thieves Like Us and Black Marble – all of whom I’m sure are well aware of The Wake.
By the time I got to Here Comes Everybody I discovered that Captured Tracks reissued a deluxe vinyl version just a few years back. It makes perfect sense as this record could serve as a foundation for a large part of their catalog. I’ve been wondering all week how I could have missed a band that I responded to immediately for so long, but this is the beauty of music for me – there is always something great out there just waiting to be found. For real music heads it’s a an education that never ends.
