This obelisk by Barnett Newman was in the outdoor sculpture collection of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. There was a larger version in the main space of the MoMA in New York City several years ago and I remember spending quite a bit of time looking at it on more than one visit there. There is just something so simple and beautiful in the mechanics of what makes this work. Later in Stockholm, we saw one of Newman’s equally impressive paintings. I knew his name from the Abstract Expressionist period but never made a direct connection to his work, something I plan on researching more now that I’m back.
