After scanning thru and quickly dismissing the terrible A$AP Mob mixtape yesterday it was nice to see the young boys from Pro Era featured on Pitchfork’s Selector today. I’ve posted about crew leader Joey Bada$$’s excellent (free) mixtape 1999 before but I just really love where these Brooklyn kids are coming from. There have been plenty of throwback crews like The Cool Kids and plenty of Golden Era vets trying to “keep it real” but Pro Era manages to update a classic sound with a fresh take that sounds completely natural. That’s not as easy as it may seem and gets a big co-sign over here.
