After all the buzz surrounding the release of epic lead single “Pyramids” followed by an open-hearted letter on his Tumblr revealing that his first love was a man, I knew Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE was going to be a big record but I wasn’t prepared for just how good it is. I was already a big fan of his Nostalgia, Ultra mixtape, which along with Watch The Throne (where Frank is also featured) soundtracked much of last summer for me. But despite having some stand out tracks it was clear Nostalgia was more of a peek into his sketchbook than a fully-formed self-portrait. After listening to channel ORANGE all morning it is immediately apparent that we are dealing with a very talented writer. Not just another singer, not just another web-famous mysterioso, not another R&B clone. This is someone with a story to tell, and if you have any doubt about that watch this clip of his performance last night on Jimmy Fallon. He decided to release the record today, a week early, and has created one of those rare moments, made possible by the internet, where everyone is listening to the same thing at the same time. Judging from Twitter the response is overwhelmingly positive. I think 2012 just got its official album of the summer.
