I first discovered Patrick Watson through his work with The Cinematic Orchestra, specifically the gorgeous song “To Build A Home.” I loved his first record Close To Paradise and raved about it to anyone who would listen. That album went on to win the 2007 Polaris Prize (equivalent to the UK’s Mercury Prize for Canada) and although I wasn’t as big a fan of 2009’s Wooden Arms his latest album Adventures in Your Own Backyard has been on repeat for me since the day it dropped. I’ve always been a sucker for piano-based composition and this record pairs his incredibly beautiful voice with songs that range from intimate to orchestral. He gets very little attention or press in the States and I’m not sure why. This album is a virtual lock for my year end list and I was very happy to grab a vinyl copy for the collection from the fine gentleman at Domino during the record sale at Smorgasburg a few Saturdays back. Highly recommended.
