I got the chance to meet original Slum Village member and Detroit City’s own Waajeed several years back when doing a feature on his then project Platinum Pied Pipers for Prefix. Waajeed is a keep it real kind of guy and suggested we meet at Junior’s in Downtown Brooklyn for a slice of their famous cheesecake. He was funny, engaging and honest not to mention generous with his time and we quickly became friends. I’ve always respected his taste and work ethic and have supported just about everything he’s done since then. He recently relaunched his Bling47 site and not only does it look great but he’s been posting an excellent series of videos explaining the genius behind some of his friend, the late great J Dilla’s most famous breaks. It’s a smart concept backed up with first hand accounts. This one about Dilla’s beat for Q-Tip’s “Higher” is probably my favorite as it illustrates Waajeed’s unique relationship with Jay Dee as well as showcasing his own infectious personality. These are a must watch for any Dilla heads or aspiring beatmakers.
