I got a chance to see one of the best DJ’s in the world perform for a Stones Throw showcase at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg last night. J Rocc played a set heavy with work from his late friend and collaborator J Dilla that also touched on many other classic hiphop producers and their sample sources. J Rocc is an animated dude who brings the music he’s spinning to life with his obvious love for it. His music knowledge and hand skills are legendary and it’s always a treat to see him play. I wish I could say the same for Madlib who lulled the crowd into a bored trance with his wall rattling bass and obscure music selections. Madlib is still a talented producer with a catalog full of classics but whether he’s rapping, dj-ing or both he has to be one of the worst live performers I’ve ever seen.

Patrick said to me “can we please NOT go see Madlib the next time he’s in town? Please?”
