I’ve really been enjoying The Hour, a 6 episode mini-series on BBC America that has now been picked up and extended for a second season. Set in a late 50’s London newsroom, Mad Men heads should feel right at home and fans of The Wire may get an initial shock to see beloved scumbag Jimmy McNulty all cleaned up and speaking in his native British accent. Although if you stick around for a couple episodes you soon find that just because they’ve changed his name to Hector and married him off to an upper crust aristocrat our old pal McNulty just can’t stay away from the booze, the women and any chance he gets to fuck his life up. The casting is spot on and the characters are both believable and consistently interesting. The writing and direction is excellent, and with a highly tuned eye for period detail they’ve given the show a film-quality, cinematic feel. Highly recommended.
