Amy Winehouse (1983 – 2011)

“What kind of fuckery is this?”  Was very sad to hear about the passing of Amy Winehouse. She had a one of a kind voice and recorded one of my favorite albums of all time Back to Black. Hearing it in a Brooklyn cafe yesterday made me realize how great it still sounds four years later. I dug up my Prefix review of the album and despite the misinterpreted lyrics on “Me & Mr. Jones” I think it still rings true. Pitchfork writer Jess Harvell posted a thoughtful remembrance that puts her short career in the proper perspective. I was lucky enough to see one of her rare sober performances in Chicago at Lollapalooza 2007 where she ran thru most of Back to Black and did gorgeous covers of Sam Cooke, Lauryn Hill and The Zutons “Valerie.” That’s the memory I’ll try to hold onto.
