I had the pleasure of reading three excellent stories by John Cheever this weekend. Cheever is a literary giant who I’ve heard about and been recommended for years but only recently started to explore. Famously called “the Chekhov of the suburbs”, he is able to brilliantly capture small portions of people’s lives in short stories that often read like mini-novels. Many of his stories are set in a gentleman’s New York that is now part of a distant past but the core of the stories always remains relevant and his craftsmanship with words can serve as a worthy lesson for writers of any age.
