Gil Scott-Heron (1949 – 2011)

Very sad to hear about the passing of the legendary Gil Scott-Heron, a man whose influence spread over four decades and all genres. Greg Tate of the Village Voice wrote a retrospective that perfectly captures the man’s spirit and jazz historian Gilles Peterson put together an excellent mix of seclected favorites. Whether you were a longtime fan, only vaguely aware of his work through the many times he was sampled or just discovered him via Jamie xx’s remix album this year – now is as good a time as any to get familiar with a catalog filled with some of the most important work in the history of music or poetry.
