The Double Hour

I was lucky enough to catch this excellent Italian film noir, winner of multiple awards at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, at Landmark Cinema this weekend. The Double Hour succeeds where so many other so-called thrillers fail with its ability to create tension and suspense by giving  just enough information and key details to move the story along without ever letting you get comfortable. The writing and directing work hand in hand to create a precise, well executed mystery with an element of romance that adds depth to both the story and characters. The actors are perfectly cast and draw you into the tightly wound story immediately. The film is receiving high critical praise and is sure to be a fixture on my year end list.
